Austria has a very lively jazz and world music scene. In order to draw more public attention to creative musicians, the Austrian Music Council (ÖMR), together with mica-musicaustria, the Ö1 Jazz editorial team, IG World Music and Porgy & Bess, was able to achieve the reorganization of an Austrian Jazz Award. Jazz is comprehensively understood as a transcultural form of music with a high proportion of improvisation.
An "Academy" of 82 experts has selected a total of 35 nominees in the categories "Best Newcomer", "Best Album" and "Best Live Act" from the more than 200 submissions for the period 2022-2024 (see www.jazzpreis.at). On this basis, a jury of six experts from the Austrian and international jazz scene has now selected three winners, who will perform at a gala at Vienna's Porgy & Bess on 5 December and will receive a cash prize and two follow-up concerts each.
The award-winning musicians will be present at the announcement of the jury's results.
The time until the award ceremony on December 5th at Porgy & Bess, which will be broadcast live by Ö1 and at which the three award winners will each play a 30-minute concert, will now be used to immerse themselves in the music of the three ensembles and to convey the colorful diversity of the entire scene to the public.
Dr. Harald Huber, initiator of the Jazz Prize (ÖMR):
The Austrian jazz scene is very diverse. This ranges from Dixieland, Swing and Neo Bebop to fusion projects with elements and inspirations from soul, funk, hip-hop and electronics. And there are many creative border crossers in the direction of new music, world or global music, Austrian folk music, blues, rock and pop. Austrian pop music, for example, benefits greatly from the excellent qualities of many jazz musicians on the one hand, and on the other hand, creative song forms, dance beats and video clips have now also arrived in the jazz scene.
